Academic Calendar

The academic calendar is divided into autumn and spring semesters of approximately 15 weeks each. The last one to three weeks of the autumn and spring semesters are devoted to final examinations, which are generally followed by holidays (two weeks after the autumn examination session and eight weeks after the spring one). The academic calendar varies depending on the level of education, mode and year of study.

The first groups of the Foundation Year begin their studies on 15 September; however, admission of students to the Foundation Year can be done all year round, new groups can be formed as students enroll. Foundation Year courses last to 30 June, with a break for holidays in the midterm from January 18. In June there is usually an examination session in four subjects taught within the course, which are a Language course (Russian for applicants to Russian-medium programmes or English for those, who apply to the English ones), Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science.

The calendar of first degree programmes varies for full-time, part-time modes of study and e-learning. For example, full-time first-years start their academic year with an official Opening Ceremony that is usually held on 31 August. They are cordially welcomed by the University Rector and the Deans, taken on a guided tour round the University campus with the special emphasis on the faculty of their choice. First classes start on 01 September and last till the end of December. In January full-time students sit for the autumn examinations and go on a two-week holiday. The spring semester lasts from February to May and is followed by the spring examination session in June, after which students enjoy a two-month summer holiday.
